Meetings & Events Calendar!

Mary Moment

Message to my children: “Summer is coming; get a job!!” I am not quite this blatant, but I am a believer that they can participate in earning their keep. They have done chores around the house. While I may not give them the highest marks for quality of the cleaning, I do believe it presents a teaching moment. The boys have mowed lawns, raked yards and shoveled snow since they were 11 or 12.

So, the college boy is home in less than a month, having a great first year at Mercyhurst…and the good news is – he has a job all lined up. You may recall the trauma he suffered last summer, as reported in this column, when he learned he would be scrubbing toilets at the Country Club of Rochester.

The Docket and eDocket

Have you heard about the MCBA's new publication The Docket? It combines the best of Views and The Journal, in a six-page, two-color, hardcopy newsletter that will be sent to members on a monthly basis.

We're including substantive articles, member articles, photos, and more. And the eDocket will be the bi-monthly electronic version, with CLE postings and event registrations.

In addition, we're also looking for stories from our members-- about changes in the laws, decisions, and our substantive topics of interest to your colleagues. Also, let us know the latest in your professional life -- firm change, award, etc. We'll include the latest in our "Member News" section.

Send your ideas, stories and photos to Liz Novak at lnovak@mcba.org. Please note: Based on length, stories may be edited at the discretion of The Docket editorial team.

Look for the premier issue of
The Docket in June!

Expanding the MCBA's Role
as "A Teaching Bar"
By Thomas G. Smith

Judge Michael Telesca has described the Monroe County Bar Association as "a teaching bar", noting that, in the absence of a law school, our Association fulfills an important role as the leading legal educator in the Rochester community.

Since the advent of compulsory legal education almost 12 years ago, the MCBA has become a recognized leader among local bars in providing members with an array of seminars and programs that not only allow our lawyers to honor their CLE obligations, but to do so in a comfortable, user-friendly venue with local lawyers and judges primarily sharing their expertise and experience.
