MCBA Mentoring Program

Mentor/Mentee Sign Up Form

Last year, the MCBA established a Mentoring Committee and today it is thriving and continuing on into its second year!.

We are currently seeking the participation of our members to serve as mentors or to enlist as mentees.Take what you think you know about mentoring and toss it out the window. It is not just a face-to-face, time-consuming relationship for new and experienced attorneys to participate. Mentoring has taken on an entirely new meaning and direction. Yes, it is still a great opportunity for new attorneys to learn from a more seasoned one, but the truth is more and more attorneys entering into a new practice area or establishing a solo practice require guidance and mentoring too.

In fact, just in the last year, the Fourth Department has seen a surge in grievances filed against attorneys. While there are several contributing factors, many of the attorneys affected are solo practitioners. No matter how seasoned the attorney is, a mentoring relationship will teach valuable skills and also help prevent costly mistakes.

So what exactly is a mentor? A mentor is someone to call or email with questions; to share lessons of the trade; to seek counsel on career or direction of practice; or to simply get together with once a month or so to have coffee or lunch and an informal conversation. A mentor is willing and able to accept calls or emails; and ready to assist a colleague when called upon.

Through the mentoring program, the MCBA is dedicated to providing a foundation of resources and tools for lawyers who don't have the luxury of asking a confidant in their office. If you would like to become a mentor or want to be paired with a mentor, please complete the sign-up form and send it to the address or fax number at the bottom. The MCBA is committed to pairing mentees with a mentor in the same or similar practice area. If you have questions, or would like more information about the program, please contact Liz Novak at 585-402-7193.

It is the generous involvement of our members that ensures the success of these types of initiatives. The MCBA has always been well-regarded for the philanthropy of time and service of our members. We hope you'll help us continue this honor by enriching the learning experience for your colleagues through the mentoring program.
